Duel in the Sun (1946) TCM August 16, 2013

Duel In The Sun

Miss Gish received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Acterss in Duel in the Sun. TV Guide called this film, "An enormous, lumbering horse opera, done up like an oversexed prize-winning bronco but revealing itself as a florid cartoon nag." I perfer oater to horse opera.

The David O. Selznick production is grand spectacle with steamy sensualism, and a storyline that could have swaggered, or crawled, out of 1940s Hollywood. Oscar winner Jennifer Jones, with whom Miss Gish worked on other film projects, gave a memorable performance. (Jones won the 1944 Best Actress Oscar at 25 for her role in The Song of Bernadette.) Jones, 1919-2009, was married to producer Selznick from 1949 until his death in 1965.

Gregory Peck plays the studly bully who loves her (original choice John Wayne, felt the role not for him). Miss Gish's husband is Lionel Barrymore. Also starring Joesph Cotten whom Miss Gish "enjoyed working with." The film normally runs 139 minutes sans commericals.

Check local listings for TCM's schedules.
